Patagonia Sur Reserves

Experience the astonishing beauty of Chilean Patagonia with fellow Colgate alumni!

We’d like to invite alumni and their families to partake in the adventure of a lifetime: a week-long journey to Chilean Patagonia to participate in the first-ever Colgate Alumni Nature Retreat, hosted by our sustainability partner, Patagonia Sur.

As a member of Patagonia Sur’s University Conservation Circle, we are able to offer an unforgettable trip to Patagonia this January when it's summer in Chile. You'll be accompanied by Colgate Sustainability Director John Pumilio. Alums will stay and play in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and will experience firsthand the incredible ecology of Chilean Patagonia.

During the trip, you will learn about blue whales, penguins, sea lions, and more up close and personal at the Melimoyu Ecosystems Research Institute (MERI), an important area of study for Colgate students and professors. In Valle California, you'll help plant trees in the Colgate Forest, and enjoy fly fishing, rafting, horseback riding, and fine Chilean food and wines.

Don't worry if you're unable to join us in Patagonia for the week of January 19th – 26th. Colgate alums and their families may visit The Patagonia Sur Reserves anytime from December 1st – March 31st, and benefit from the same preferential discount. Simply contact or call 508-939-3667 today to plan your adventure! See below for more information on our ongoing offer to Colgate alumni.

This seven-night trip is available from January 19 – 26, 2013, for a special rate of $5,020 per adult and $2,985 per child (airfare to Puerto Montt, Chile (PMC), not included). This is a 35 percent discount from regular rates. To book your trip contact or call 508-939-3667 and indicate that you are interested in the Colgate alumni trip. The Patagonia Sur travel concierge can also assist you with flight bookings or suggested itineraries for international or domestic flights. The registration deadline is Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

Saturday, January 19 at noon: Patagonia Sur representatives will meet guests at El Tepual airport in Puerto Montt (PMC) to assist with your journey to Valle California. A charter plane will be waiting at the terminal to take you on a one-hour flight over the ocean and Andes Mountains to the town of Palena.  Guests will be greeted by the on-site Patagonia Sur team, and will be driven 30 minutes to Valle California, where you will be welcomed at the Quincho with delicious hors d’oeuvres and a traditional Chilean Pisco Sour. For guests who want to stretch their legs, there are some easy trails near the Quincho, or you may opt to relax in the riverside hot tub.

Sunday, January 20: One suggestion to begin the first full day in Valle California is a beautiful walk through the El Tigre trail, visiting some of the different types of forests within Valle California. After lunch in the Quincho, guests may saddle up and go on a horseback ride to the Colgate University Forest.  After an adventure-filled day, guests may freshen up and return to the Quincho for a gourmet dinner accompanied by delicious Chilean wines.

Monday, January 21: Hike, fly fish, or float on a river… you are free to choose. Each evening, the head guide will meet with you to review the excursion options for the following day, along with lunch and dinner options. For example: Adult guests may spend the morning fishing in the El Tigre river, right next to the hot-tub area, while their children try their luck in the fun rapids of the El Tigre. An afternoon hike to Laguna Corazón, or a horseback ride to El Fraile waterfall can complete the day.

Tuesday, January 22: A full-day hike to Laguna Caiquén, a pristine Andean lake is an amazing opportunity to visit an old-growth Lenga forest (a native species of deciduous beech tree) and the chance to spot the mighty Andean condor. Upon arriving at the lake, our chef will surprise guests with a special lunch outdoors in this amazing setting. Guests will be rewarded at the end of the day with an inviting, family-style dinner at the Quincho, where stories of the day’s adventures can be shared.

Wednesday, January 23: A morning hike will allow guests to further explore the wonders of Valle California before continuing on to the second part of their journey in Melimoyu. After lunch at the Quincho, guests will be driven to Palena to board a charter plane to fly to Melimoyu, where the Patagonia Sur staff will be waiting to welcome guests and show them to Casa Bahía, our guesthouse in Melimoyu. Once in Melimoyu, guests will have the rest of the afternoon to meet the Expeditions Team and plan the second half of their trip, and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in and around Casa Bahía.

Thursday, January 24: For your first full day in Melimoyu, we suggest an early morning kayak to Melimoyu village, spotting rare birds along the way, then an afternoon helicopter ride to get a bird’s-eye view of the whole Melimoyu property and possibly toast with a glass of wine at the Melimoyu glacier.

Friday, January 25: On the last full day in Melimoyu, guests may choose a half-day excursion aboard the Chucao I, navigating through the fjords of coastal Patagonia while participating in a photo safari to capture great shots of sea birds, dolphins, and other large ocean mammals.

Saturday, January 26: After a hearty breakfast and a brief morning activity, guests will be transported to the Melimoyu airstrip by boat for their return flight to Puerto Montt. During the charter flight, guests will have a final opportunity to see the Melimoyu volcano and say goodbye to Patagonia. Once in Puerto Montt, guests will connect to their domestic flights to Santiago and subsequent international connections.

Note: All daily activities are highly customizable, so your stay may be unique from what is suggested in this sample itinerary. Space is limited to 12 persons for this trip.  A minimum of 8 bookings are needed to reserve the facilities for Colgate exclusively.  Trip will be led by Sustainability Director, John Pumilio, dependent on meeting the minimum attendance of 8 individuals.
