Member Connections

Jimmy Ryan ’14, Colgate Men’s Lacrosse Captain, has always known that teamwork is the key to success, both on the field and in life.

Faced with the prospect of life post-Colgate, Jimmy realized the importance of making connections and building relationships with alumni, but he wasn’t sure where to start. “As a History major and Geography minor, I wasn’t initially sure what path my career would take, “Jimmy says.

Roommate, Justin, was a good influence, encouraging Jimmy to secure an internship in the summer before his Senior Year. “When someone else is on top of their game, it makes you want to be on top of yours. I didn’t want to be left behind.” Jimmy says.
Through conversations with teammates, Jimmy was encouraged to reach out to Kevin Danehy ’83 P’16, Chair of the Presidents’ Club.

“Mr. Danehy gave me good advice. He taught me about the importance of building strong, genuine relationships.”

Kevin Danehy provided a number of valuable connections to Jimmy, which led to securing an internship at the New York Stock Exchange during Summer, 2013.

Jimmy worked alongside Kate Lyden ’00, Ben McCabe ‘11 and Will Treichler ‘11. “They gave me a tremendous amount of responsibility in both research and marketing, which gave me the opportunity to build important skills,” Jimmy recalls.

During his summer in New York, Jimmy attended an event sponsored by the Crease Club – the Men’s Lacrosse alumni group. There he reconnected with Rob Bosco ’11, a structured finance analyst and Ernst and Young. When Jimmy considered his post-graduation job prospects, Rob encouraged him to apply for a position with Ernst and Young in their management training program.

“Rob gave me great advice and mentored me through the entire process. I liked the fact that Ernst and Young expects a lot of its trainees and promotes a collegial atmosphere. I am used to putting in long hours through Lacrosse and working for E&Y seemed like a great fit professionally and personally.”

Jimmy applied for the position in early September and after meeting with Amy DiSibio ’86 P’18 during the Emerging Leaders Luncheon at Homecoming, received an introduction to Carmine DiSibio ’85 P’18, Global Managing Partner at E&Y.

Jimmy accepted a job offer from E&Y in October 2013 and will join their team shortly after graduating in May 2014. “I am so thankful to the many personal coaches who helped me along the way. Colgate alumni are so willing to lend support and it makes me want to give back in the same way.”
